Help: USPS lost my passport

Hi all! Could you please help me with advice? USPS lost my passport! It's like the most valuable thing they possibly could loose for me - and they sure did! I messed up too: bought a prepaid label through a self service kiosk and left receipt in the car, my husband stopped by gas station next morning and trashed receipt while cleaning out the car. I have no tracking. Embassy where I was getting my visa said they mailed my passport on 21 of July. They don't have my tracking neither. They also don't pick up the phone. My trip is in 2 weeks, USPS Priority envelope with my passport and visa is nowhere to be found, and I'm freaking out.
Here is the question: is there a way I can recover the tracking number? I asked my post office and offered cc number, transaction amount and time, but they said they have no record of any transactions for self service kiosks. I initiated cc charge dispute for this transaction, just so that my bank requests a receipt from USPS, but I'm not hopeful. Is there anything else I can do?

    This is a long shot, but do you have the USPS informed app? It will track and report on shipments that are coming to you without you needing to enter tracking numbers.

    Omg I am SO sorry to hear this!!!! I can see why you are stressing with your trip being 2 weeks away. While i dont have any helpful advice in regards to getting the lost one found, I do know that there are places you can go to to get a passport in 24 hours. we have a place here in CT. I saw you are in Cali, but maybe there is a place near you that you can go to. you can file that your passport has been lost and then maybe you can apply for a new one and have it ready in a day. I'm sorry, I wish I had more info for you :(

    @aanny if you sign up myusps dashboard it gives you every shipment that is coming to your addresss. I see things even in preshipment. You can get tracking that way! Good luck!

    @Aanny so sorry to hear this! I don't have any tips on how to find the tracking, but I do know that you can get a new passport in as little as that same day. If I recall from swapping, you live near me...and the nearest passport office to me is in SF. A couple years ago I messed up and didn't realize my kids' passports had expired and we were leaving in a few days… I forget the specifics regarding what time they were open, but I basically went and stood in a long line at the passport agency, and left that same day with the passport. I remember there was even a guy standing in front of me who had a flight to the Philippines that very evening, and he made it out with his new passport in time. If you do a google search for the SF passport agency, you can probably come up with the details you need to find out when you would need to go. Unfortunately I have no idea about visas, and how difficult it might be to replace that… Probably depends on the country you are going to...but I'm guessing they can expedite that as well.     @Aanny another option re: getting a replacement passport really fast is to contact your Congressperson. Just google [your congressperson] + passport and it should direct you to their travel assistance page. A couple of friends did this recently.

    @JodiAnne Thank you! I will take a look right now! The problem is that it's not a US passport, I'm just a resident, not a citizen, so I have to use my national passport for traveling. There is a Russian embassy in San Francisco, and I will try to report my lost passport tomorrow. It is such a pain in the tail to get a new Russian passport, so I was hoping it will be magically found, just like in a fairytale.

    @Aanny definitely. My dashboard has stuff from June.

    The dashboard is separate than the usual usps account... should be under myusps dashboard or something

    @californiajanet hi! Thanks for sharing your story, it made me hopeful that I would be able to get the new passport done before my non-refundable trip! I need a new Russian passport, not the US one, and I do live close to San Francisco, they have Russian Embassy. Will be calling them tomorrow to see if they can expedite...

    @Aanny I'm pretty new to the dashboard as well so I don't know if there's a way to find past shipments but maybe you can contact USPS and explain the situation and ask if there's a way they can ping the tracking number somehow (as if it were scanned somewhere) so that it shows up in your tracking.

    I am sorry this happened and I hope your passport shows up soon.

    I'm sad to say that your best bet is going to be to have it replaced. Go straight to the Embassy ASAP. I'm sure it's not the first time they've dealt with this problem so they should know how to handle it. You may want to call first, but sometimes things are done more quickly if the person is physically there, waiting in the office.

    My husband's passport was lost in the mail just before we had to go overseas for our wedding & he had to go back in & have it all done over again.

    I hope it is all sorted for you very quickly!

    @aanny I just created a dashboard too and it says 0 packages but I know for a fact my psmh will be delivered today. Maybe it takes a while to sync?

    I can't offer anything to help, but my passport is out for renewal now and I leave on my trip Sept 20th - this is my WORST nightmare!

    I recently renewed my passport and when it came, our mailguy put it in my neighbor's box by mistake. Luckily, she was super nice and returned it right away. I shudder to think of what would have happened had she not been.

    My app now shows a few packages that are on the way, but not the passport. I'm guessing it was delivered somewhere already. Checked with my embassy, and they said it will take 3 month (!) to make a new passport for me. No expedited services available. I can believe it, we live in 21st century after all. No need to say I'm devastated and pretty much ready to kiss my trip to Paris and Italy goodbye... Took a day off tomorrow to sit and wait for the mailman who can maybe check if he delivered it in the wrong box (I live in apartments complex, and my mailbox is right next to 20-30 others). Looks like it's my last hope at this point.

    @Aanny I'm so sorry you're going through this! It sounds like a nightmare and I'm hoping you are able to recover your passport. Keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending positive thoughts!

    If you do end up being forced to cancel your trip (knock on wood), you can check to see if your credit card(s) offer any travel insurance or protection to help you either recoup your costs or reschedule your vacation. Earlier this year I had a family emergency and had to cancel a vacation at the last minute but my credit card was able to refund most of my hotel and flight costs.

    Also have you tried asking your neighbors about it? Packages and letters are constantly being mixed up at my apartment complex too. Maybe one of your neighbors has it and just hasn't had the time to deliver it back to you yet, since they don't realize how important of a package it is!

    @Aanny, on my bank online service, I can click on a credit card transaction and get more information. Perhaps you can do the same, or perhaps if you call your bank they can pull the receipt for you? The receipts have the tracking info on it. And, by the way, you said you bought a label from the kiosk, what service did you buy? I assume that was for the return? Was it express mail, or just first class? And what return address did you put on the label?
